Lazio have lost out on Diego Lugano and so are turning their attention towards Newcastle defender Fabricio Coloccini.
The Biancocelesti had been in talks with Uruguayan Lugano, but this weekend he put an end to the move by extending his contract with Fenerbahce.
Now they are looking to other targets and the one highlighted by the Corriere dello Sport newspaper is Coloccini.
It would be a return to Serie A for the Argentine, even if he only ever played a handful of games for Milan.
Newcastle are eager to cash in on the player and he would be welcome in Italy as he has an EU passport, but Lazio face competition from Palermo.
Other targets include out of contract former Marseille man Renato Civelli, Sporting Braga’s Alberto Rodriguez and even Arsenal star William Gallas.
“We do have a list of alternatives, these are all players who can help bring something extra to the team,” explained director of sport Igli Tare.“We may have come out of a very difficult time as a club, but we stick to our philosophy. Lugano could’ve had a space in the squad, but I can assure you beyond him there are other options, even better ones.”
Even Inter defender Marco Materazzi has been suggested as a potential new reinforcement for Lazio.
“He has certainly had a very important career, but he has a certain age and I don’t think that is the right direction for us,” added Tare.
