Fiorentina plan to have Riccardo Montolivo captain the side in Serie A and Adrian Mutu for the Champions League.
The unusual idea was reportedly the brainchild of Coach Cesare Prandelli and has received positive feedback from within the squad.
Montolivo is the first choice as captain following his fine performances and central role to their play.
The 23-year-old also embodies Fiorentina’s policy of bringing youth through to dominate their first team selection.
A former Under-21 international who was cut from the Euro 2008 squad, he is set to take a stronger position in the Azzurri side in future.
This will be Montolivo’s fourth Serie A campaign in a Viola jersey and he flies out to Beijing in August for the Olympic Games.
However, he still lacks international experience and this is why Prandelli hopes to make Mutu the captain exclusively for the Champions League matches.
It would also be a way of rewarding the Romanian for rejecting a move to Bayern Munich this summer.
