On Sunday night Inter welcome Fiorentina in what should be an enthralling Serie A encounter. Former striker Maurizio Ganz, who played for both clubs during his career, gave an interview to Violanews.com in which he talked about this match.
"Inter's match in the Champions League [against Manchester United] will be an advantage for Fiorentina if they qualify," he said, "in that case there might be some relaxation in the team and Fiorentina might take advantage of that.
"However, if Inter are eliminated, it would be a big problem for the Viola as the elimination would make the players angry, and they would need to win against Fiorentina. In any case, Fiorentina have the advantage of having a full week to prepare each match, and this could bring about a surprising result on Sunday night."
On whether the Viola are the favorites to earn a Champions League spot, he said, "Yes, they have a quality squad and a really good coach. A team can go through difficult times as it happens to a lot of teams, such as Napoli now or Juventus a few months ago, it's up to the players to react.
"At the moment they are struggling, but I think it's mostly due to the injuries, like [Adrian] Mutu: he's a fundamental player for Fiorentina and fortunately [Alberto] Gilardino scored a lot in the early part of the season. Right now Gila is having some problems, but the Viola have a Mutu in great shape."
Currently Fiorentina are in fourth place with 46 points, 17 less than Inter who are battling it out with Juventus for the Scudetto.
