Melo: Florence is my Maracanà
Fiorentina signing Felipe Melo has spoken of his excitement at joining the Viola, describing the Artemio Franchi stadium as his Maracanà.
The Brazilian, who came from Spanish club Almeria, is thrilled at the prospect of playing in next year’s Champions League.
Fiorentina clinched a spot in Europe’s premier club competition on the final day of the season by beating Torino 1-0.
“I relaxed that evening,” said Melo. “I was happy, full of stupendous thoughts linked to my future.”
The talented 24-year-old was a hit in this season’s La Liga, leading promoted side Almeria to eighth place.
“It was a minor miracle. I am actually very sorry to be leaving, it has been a fantastic year, my best season in Europe.” Melo scored six goals in 34 appearances with the Andalucian side.
Speaking in La Gazzetta dello Sport, the former Flamengo man gave fans an inkling of what they can expect next year.
“I am a central midfielder with two principal characteristics. I always look for goal – only one player, Xavi, has out-scored me this year from the middle – and I am, physically, very strong.”
Melo was in expansive mood, describing his life in a detailed fashion. “I was born in Volta Redonda, near Rio de Janeiro. I started playing for Flamengo, who I continue to support.
“I made my debut 10 minutes from the end a championship fixture and scored with my first touch. It was an historic goal because it saved Flamengo from relegation. I then went to Cruzeiro, where I won everything under Vanderlei Luxemburgo.”
That Cruzeiro side was full of talent and included Inter’s Maicon, Lyon’s Cris, PSV’s Bruno Gomes and half of the current Fenerbahce squad.
After success at Cruzeiro and Almeria, Melo felt it was time for a new challenge and chose Fiorentina.
“I wanted a change. A new country, city and championship. Here in Spain, they call La Liga the League of the stars, but I want passion as well. I wanted to move to a place similar to Brazil, where the fans give everything. I thought about England and Italy.
“Last summer I was very close to Lazio. This year I have received many offers, but when I came to know of Fiorentina’s interest, there was no question in my mind.
“Fiorentina are super famous in Brazil, they have a great reputation. I grew with Gabriel Batistuta as my idol, I copied his ‘machine-gun’ celebration after scoring.
“And then there is the Coach of my national team, Dunga, who played there for a lifetime.”
Melo’s links to England, however, could prove a problem in the future for his new club. He called his son Lineker, after Gary Lineker, the legendary English goalscorer.
