Mancini: Forget Fiorentina title
Roberto Mancini insists Fiorentina “are not Scudetto contenders” and admits he’s resigned to not having Patrick Vieira back anytime soon.
Going into Sunday’s game at the Stadio Franchi, the Viola are in fifth place, just four points off leaders Inter.
“It will be a very difficult match and we need a great performance to overcome this obstacle,” commented the Coach.
“I don’t know if Fiorentina can be considered competitive right away. Playing in the UEFA Cup and Serie A can be very tiring in the long run and this year will certainly have caused them problems.
“Over the years they will become a great side. Although not Scudetto contenders now because with a lot of young players there can be a lack of consistency, if they remain united for a number of years then they can create a winning cycle.”
There is one veteran who stands out in the Fiorentina squad – former Inter striker Christian Vieri, who walked out on the club following a furious row with Mancini.
“I think he seems better physically now. Perhaps he’ll want to give a little extra against Inter, but he always goes on to the field to give 100 per cent.”
The Nerazzurri boss has got into trouble over the past week for criticising the sports medical profession, who he accuses of being too soft on players.
Mancio showed he stands by his statements when asked whether Vieira can recover in time for the Milan derby.
“It is extremely difficult. I have now resigned myself to that fact. I don’t want to get into the details, otherwise I’ll receive another letter of complaint from the doctors…”
Vieira has played a total of 156 minutes of club football this season in three different games. His last appearance was in the 2-1 win away to CSKA Moscow on October 23, where he picked up a thigh strain.
