<>Fiorentina star hopes to play 'big role' in Germany (ANSA) - Rome, January 4 - Fiorentina's new Lion King Luca Toni is set on a World Cup dream .

"Last year was fantastic for me. If I keep going like this I can hope to play a big role at the World Cup," Italy's No.1 striker said Thursday .

With 16 goals from 15 starts, Toni is on track to beat Swedish star Gunnar Nordahl's Serie A record of 35 goals, set in 1950 .

His goal-getting feats have helped take Fiorentina back to the heights it inhabited when Argentina's Gabriel Batistuta was racking up truckloads of goals in the 1990s .

Batistuta was Florence's original Lion King and has attended recent matches that have kept Fiorentina breathing down the necks of Inter and Milan behind runaway Serie A leaders Juventus .

The Argentine had a statue erected to him by Fiorentina's famously ardent supporters, who have taken to Toni in the same way they worshipped his great predecessor .

"Tonigol, Tonigol" is the chant that Toni hears as he scores every goal, echoing Batistuta's famous tag 'Batigol' .

On Thursday Toni also denied recent reports linking him to Spanish giants Barcelona .

He described them as "pure fantasy." "All I ever said was that I thought (Barcelona superstar and European Footballer of the Year) Ronaldhino was the best player in the world." Toni is tied to Fiorentina by a four-year contract he signed in a ten-million-euro move from Palermo last summer .

The Florentine club Fiorentina have no intention of letting him go as they chase a place in next year's Champions League .

Last week reports surfaced that Barca emissaries had got close to Toni and offered him the lavish sum of three million euros a season .

Spain has been wild about the tall striker since he scored a World Cup qualifying hat-trick in September .

Luca, The Man Who Recalls Marco was next day's headline in top daily El Pais, referring to Toni's idol, AC Milan legend Marco Van Basten .

Spanish eyes grew bigger when Toni opened the scoring in a surprise Italy win against a much-fancied Dutch side - now coached by Van Basten - in Amsterdam recently .

All this is the stuff of dreams for Toni, a late bloomer who a few years ago was seriously thinking about hanging up his boots and becoming a truck driver or a realtor .

Once criticised for his size 13 feet and lumbering body, the 28-year-old has turned his height and strength into huge assets .
