La Viola have been dealt some crushing blows on the injury front, with news that some of Cesare Prandelli’s key players are set to miss this weekend’s crucial clash with Reggina.
A whole host of Fiorentina stars are in serious doubt for this weekend’s clash with Reggina, and although their Calabrian opponents may not be the toughest test they will face all season, it’s a match which the Tuscan side simply must win.
Heading the list of injured players is Adrian Mutu, who has been included in the squad but remains in doubt with a knee injury. A decision on the Romanian’s fitness will be made at the last minute, according to the latest reports from Florence.
It is assumed, however, that Prandelli will rest his superstar this weekend in order to ensure that he is fully fit and raring to go for his side’s trip to Munich next week.
Meanwhile, la Viola are also waiting on news of Martin Jorgensen, who has spent the last four days at the Careggi hospital in order to be subjected to a series of check-ups. The Danish midfielder is suffering from a troublesome form of influenza, and is now thankfully in the process of recovering; however, he remains unlikely to play at all this weekend.
The player has been fatigued and dazed for most of the past week, and this may possibly explain why Jorgensen, against Steaua Bucharest, was slow and reactive to his opponents at times - something which he received lots of criticism for.
The final problems for Prandelli relate to the attack, and with the potential loss of Mutu, the boss can ill afford to lose more of his star forwards. However, both Giampaolo Pazzini and Alberto Gilardino are in quite some doubt to play this weekend due to slight knocks they received in the past week.
If they both fail to play, Prandelli is expected to employ a forward trident of Santana, Osvaldo and Jovetic, with the latter expected to play despite picking up a knock for Montenegro against Italy in the midweek round of World Cup qualifiers.
It’s not easy being a coach of an Italian football club at the moment. However, as is the case with his opponents, Prandelli will simply have to make do with what is available to him and try to do all within his power to ensure that his side come away with the three points.
