Riccardo Montolivo is set to start against Bulgaria this evening, as Marcello Lippi promises “some surprises.”
Italy are without Gianluigi Buffon, Mauro Camoranesi and Andrea Pirlo for the trip to Sofia, while Lippi did not call up Alessandro Del Piero, Antonio Cassano or Andrea Barzagli.
“If Bulgaria feel more confident because of our absences, then that doesn’t disappoint me. They could have a few surprises,” smirked the Coach.
Lippi does seem set to make sweeping changes to his line-up at the Levski Stadium, as Fiorentina duo Montolivo and Alberto Gilardino break into the side.
Gilardino coming in for Luca Toni was already in the air over the last few days, but this morning’s training session provided another clue with Montolivo replacing Simone Perrotta in the 4-3-3 system.
