Palermo defender Andrea Barzagli may turn down an offer from Fiorentina in order to join German side Wolfsburg.
The Italian international was near to sealing a deal with the Tuscans, but negotiations between the Viola and the player's agent have turned for the worse.
Barzagli was reportedly happy to move to the Franchi and Palermo were set to accept a £6m bid for him. However, Fiorentina couldn't satisfy his contract demands.
The defender was asking for just £200,000 more than the Gigliati's offer, but Barzagli's deadline for negotiations has now passed.
Juventus tried to reach an agreement with the Rosanero by offering £10m for the player, but Wolfsburg are in pole position due to their £2.5m per season contract offer.
Cristian Zaccardo has already agreed terms with the Bundesliga side so the Palermo duo could move to Germany together during the summer.
Fiorentina have now set their sights on other options at the back, such as Atalanta hard man Moris Carrozzieri and want-away Roma reserve Matteo Ferrari.
Meanwhile, Viola midfielder Fabio Liverani has announced that he will be considering his options in the next few weeks.
The former Lazio man is free to move as his contract is due to expire, with Palermo, Napoli and Torino already having shown their interest.
