Osvaldo’s scissor kick has taken Viola back to the Champions’ League at the expense of a dreadful Milan. The style of play of this team is lovely, and they are ready for the Champions’ League. Mutu and Montolivo have led the team from the front and if Viola can keep them, this team can grow. Cesare Prandelli who tragically lost his wife this season has found admirable strength in leading his team to this triumph.
Best Player: Adrian Mutu: He is back to his best. The playmaker, leader and goalscorer of this team. Romania may spring a shock at the Euros with this great player at the helm.
Had an 11-point lead in Serie A, and only thanks to the ineptitude of Parma, scraped their first ‘real’ Scudetto victory since 1989 (the last two don’t count!). Inter have not been all that impressive, but the sheer size of their squad has helped them stumble over the finishing line. In the Champions’ League they were hopeless, and this is what let them down yet again.
Best Player: Mario Balotelli: A mere teenager, but so strong and composed, it would be fair to doubt the accuracy of his birth certificate. He has effectively played for half of the season, but for the half he has played, Super Mario has been a revelation. He dominates set-pieces for a massive team, and you can see he will get better.
Luciano Spalletti needs to add to the squad, because the small size of it has cost Roma a league title. The football Roma play is beautiful, but the lack of a main striker is simply a problem, Totti plays the role well, but he can bring far more to a team than this. Juventus and a bruised AC Milan are likely to push Roma out of the top two; this season was a missed opportunity.
Best Player: Daniele De Rossi: The penalty miss at Old Trafford let him down, but he is now the leader of Roma. A more elegant and talented version of Gennaro Gatusso.
It’s no secret that I deeply dislike this club, but their return to Serie A has been impressive. They have scored many goals, play decent football, and with the squad they have now, will be more than ready to play in the Champions’ League. With a few signings they will actually challenge for the league next season. Credit to Claudio Ranieri.
Best Player: Alessandro Del Piero: Being a Roma and Totti supporter, I have never appreciated Del Piero, and I with many people thought he was finished. Capocannonieri with 21 goals, this season he has returned to his best. He has a new lease of life and should play at Euro 2008 for the Azzurri with Toni and Cassano.
